WORKSHOP COMPLETE!!

Thanks to all participants for a very successful event. Presentations are available online. There are also photo's available at the following locations:

Background

This is a follow on from the SKA Wide Field Imaging Workshop held at ASTRON in June 2005. The objective is to address calibration and imaging issues for SKA and next generation radio telescopes.

Topics of interest

  • Wide field imaging (including imaging into beam sidelobes)
  • Aperture arrays
  • Focal plane arrays
  • Ionospheric calibration
  • Parallelization of algorithms
  • Propagation of processing-induced errors
  • Post correlation RFI mitigation
  • Robust "automated" calibration and imaging
  • Simulation
  • Other topics relating to calibration and imaging issues for SKA and next generation radio telescopes

Attendance and presentations

As per the previous workshop, the intention is to allow for focused technical discussion. Hence attendance has been mostly driven by invitation and will be limited to about 45 people. Should you not have received an invitation and would like to attend, please contact the address below.

Oral presentations are likely to be of the order of 20-25 minutes. Time will be allocated for open discussion as well.

The registration and abstract submission deadline was 1 Nov 2006 and we have pretty much the full complement. Please contact the address below should you be feeling very left out.

Accommodation Options

Please see Accommodation. Book early! Map below.

Arriving

Although we will be providing transport between the listed accommodation and the workshop venue and icebreaker (see below), participants are expected to find their own way from the airport to their accommodation on arrival (about 10 km). If you are not hiring a car, there are numerous airport shuttles and taxis available. Here are a few airport shuttle options with some pricing (book in advance for these).

Venue

The workshop will be held in the new auditorium (next to the SALT building) at the Cape Town headquarters of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). A Google Earth image and placemark is available here and a map of the area is attached to this page (below). The SAAO website is http://www.saao.ac.za . Please do not contact them directly with queries regarding the workshop, however, as they are merely providing the venue. If you require lifts between the listed accommodation and the workshop venue on Mon 4 Dec - Wed 6 Dec, please let us know (also from which guest house). To check we have it correct, your preference will be listed on the ListOfParticipants page. The lifts will leave the guest houses at 08h10 on Monday and 08h30 on Tues and Wed.

Ice-breaker

For those arriving early enough, this is to be held as informal drinks at the Radisson Hotel in the Cape Town Waterfront between 18h00 and 20h30 on Sun 3 Dec. Participants are expected to cover their own costs for the ice-breaker. To get a rough idea of numbers, if you plan to attend this, please let us know. If you would require a lift between the listed accommodation and the Radisson for the ice-breaker evening, please indicate as such and at which guest house we should pick you up. To check we have it correct, your preference will be listed on the ListOfParticipants page. The lifts will leave the guest houses at 17h40 on the Sunday.

Workshop Dinner

This will be held on Mon 4 Dec at 19h00-22h00 at Moyo at Spier which is near the town of Stellenbosch. The workshop will cover the cost of the meal (excluding drinks) and provide transport to/from the dinner. Participants have been assumed to be going unless we are notified otherwise. Please notify us if you plan to bring a partner (for which there may be some charge). Please see ListOfParticipants page to check that we have your dinner details correct. We will be travelling out to the dinner in a 50-seater bus, leaving from the SAAO at 18h30. The workshop ends at 17h00 so there is some time in between this and the dinner to return to the guest houses, freshen up, drop off bags, etc.

Costs

There will be no registration fee for the workshop. Attendee's will, however, be required to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses as well as their drinks' bill's at the icebreaker and dinner.
